The Carroll J. Downing Collection hosts more than
40 photos and more. The CD with the original scans is available, along
with our other collectibles. See the "How You Can Help" page for
details.
Photos all have handwritten names on them. We set them
to text here for the purposes of the search engines... Doing the best we can. Names are
matched against the
ship's log when the ship originally sailed. If we find what looks
like a match, we name the whole name. I have inserted question marks
against names for which we don't have more data. That we don't have the
full names sometimes probably means, much like Mr. Downing himself, that
they came aboard after the launching. I'm sure a thorough search of the
full ship's log, as was done for Mr. Downing would reveal the date they
came aboard. Fantail onboard the
Davis, Destroyer Escort DE357. This photo, always interesting
because it is natural, catches some of the crew in a bit of repose.
Trout is grinning. Some of the other guys look like they might like to
be ugly with the photographer. The crew of the Davis were men of
goodwill... but deadly when aroused. They exhibited the proper naval
attitude.
